Protecting & Preserving Our Environment
At The Save Mart Companies, we care deeply about the neighborhoods we serve and the beautiful West Coast we call home. We are dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint, conserving water, and optimizing energy use through responsible business practices. Our ongoing recycling initiatives and commitment to environmental stewardship reflect our pledge to building a more sustainable food system, including the fact all the eggs sold across our store banners are 100% cage-free and in compliance with state laws. By continuously innovating and refining our approach, we strive to protect the planet today and for generations to come.
2025 Sustainability by the Numbers
We’re putting food on the table, not in a landfill
The Save Mart Companies is bringing innovation to grocery retail and leading the way as the first grocer in California to partner with Flashfood. Together, we’re making a meaningful impact on people and the planet by reducing food waste and offering shoppers incredible deals on nutritious, quality food.
Flashfood’s free app connects shoppers with fresh produce, meat, and other high-quality groceries at up to 50 percent off, diverting food waste from landfills while providing affordable access to fresh food. Every item sold through Flashfood is one less item in a landfill, helping consumers put affordable meals on the table.
Plus, Flashfood works seamlessly alongside The Save Mart Companies’ long-standing ‘Fresh Rescue’ program, now in its 15th year of feeding local communities through partnerships with Feeding America and local food banks. Together, we’re tackling food waste so that the bounty of California’s farms ends up on the table, not in a landfill.
Turning unsold food into renewable energy
Since 2020, The Save Mart Companies has partnered with Divert to give unsold, non-donatable food a second life. Instead of going to a landfill, that food travels to Divert's facility right here in Turlock, California, where it's converted into renewable natural gas that powers homes and nutrient-rich fertilizer that helps grow future crops — closing the loop on waste close to home.
Over five years and across 191 stores, we've diverted 61,731 tons of food waste from landfills, including a record-breaking 15,805 tons in 2025 alone. In 2025, we renewed our commitment to this partnership for another three years — building on strong store participation and a shared belief that responsible operations and community care go hand in hand.
