The Save Mart C.A.R.E.S. Foundation has been sponsoring Teen Camp since 2010 … a camp run by the Nevada/California Diabetes Association for kids aged 12-17,  living with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This year, C.A.R.E.S. donated $15,000.

The teen years are offer the hardest for a person with diabetes. The camp is designed to make these campers successful, as they enter adulthood. It aims to make sure the campers have the education and confidence to be successful contributing members of the community.

At Teen Camp the diabetes education is geared towards adult topics, so they have the knowledge to make the best possible choices. This year’s classes were: basil testing after leaving home, the affect of diabetes on the family, transitioning from high school to college, preparing for pregnancy with diabetes, insurance and diabetes, dental hygiene and diabetes. Teen Camp is also a leadership camp. The goal is to make these teens able to teach others about this chronic condition.

Save Mart store managers from the local Nevada stores came out and joined us on Saturday, October 29. They participated in some of the activities like the rocks and ropes course, (you will see Juan in the yellow shirt going up the tower),  Gaga ball and lunch. The teens had a blast with them all!

“We know that our success with the Teen Camp, our Emergency Medical Program (which is run this through the Save Mart’s pharmacy) and other support services have a tremendous impact on the community because of our partnership with Save Mart,” said Sarah Gleich, Executive Director of the Nevada/California Diabetes Association.
