Officials with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) have advised consumers not to eat Dungeness and Rock crabs caught in waters between the Oregon border and the southern Santa Barbara County line because dangerous levels of domoic acid, a naturally-occuring toxin, have been detected in these crabs.
- The California Fish and Game Commission has not yet opened the state’s Dungeness crabbing season for 2015.
- Because the Dungeness and Rock crab season has not yet opened, Save Mart, Lucky Supermarkets, and FoodMaxx do not carry any fresh crab that has been harvested from the noted regions this season.
- Our stores only carry crabs that are from approved harvest areas as determined by State food safety authorities.
- The alert does not apply to previously-frozen Dungeness crab, king crab, or snow crab.
