Save Mart donated 15 tons of compost to the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services’ Demonstration Garden. The produce that stores are unable to sell or donate is sent to Recology for composting. On occasion, the company is able to donate the rich soil to local gardens run by non-profits. Save Mart was one of the early grocery chains that embraced composting in 1997.
Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services’ Demonstration Garden is used to educate the community on where food comes from and how to successfully grow it. Beginning this Spring, the organization will once again host gardening classes to the public on such topics as garden design, planting, pest management, irrigation, soil care and more.
The Demonstration Garden also includes an outdoor kitchen table where clients gather around to learn how to prepare the food they harvest from the garden. The produce grown in the garden is also given to clients of the Adult Education and Parent Education programs to help improve their access to healthy foods.
The compost donation was so much, the food bank was able to share the compost with Sacramento High School and Orangevale Food Bank.
