The Save Mart Companies C.A.R.E.S. Foundation teamed up with Miller-Coors to donate $1,500 to Turn on to America in Contra Costa County.

Based out of Oakland, CA, Turn on to America is a nonprofit that delivers boxes of food to cash-strapped neighborhoods throughout Contra Costa and Alameda Counties. This small-but-mighty group of volunteers works daily to collect freshly rescued food from local grocery stores and the San Francisco Produce Market to package into food boxes delivered twice weekly to neighborhoods and unload food for whomever would like a box.

Turn on to America scales up its work during the holidays, delivering thousands of food boxes for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Interestingly, this is the only time each year they purchase food—all other products are donated. Having established such strong community bonds, the U.S. Marines have entrusted them as the largest Bay Area distributor for Toys for Tots.

The Save Mart C.A.R.E.S. Foundation’s contribution will help with food distribution costs and to pay maintenance on the industrial refrigeration unit.
